Spicy Mamra / Murmura (Puffed Rice - Low Fat Recipe)

Instant spicy puffed rice too munch anytime of the day. I first had these at a friend’s place in Gujarat. In Gujarat these puffed rice┬áare known as Mamra. This is one of the famous spicy quick snack recipes of Gujarat. In fact┬áit is mainly known as Sev┬áMamra┬áthere, I havent added sev to this recipe by choice to keep it low-fat recipe.

I learnt┬áto prepare this┬áfrom my friends mother and ever since then I make these at home very often and find it to be┬áeasy and quick. These Mamra’s come to my stomach’s rescue every time I have hunger pangs :), and all I do is then┬átake a handful of these and have them.

Ingredients -

  • Puffed rice -┬á3 cups
  • Roasted chana dal/ Chutney daal (daria)┬á-┬á 1/4 cup
  • Roasted chana with black peel - 1/4 cup
  • Peanuts - 1/2 cup
  • Asafoetida - 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Red chilli powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt to taste
  • Curry leaves - 10 - 15
  • Oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Dry red chillies - 4 -5 (I forgot to add these to my recipe while cooking)

These ingredients can be adjusted as per the taste.

Method -

Take a wok / kadai and add oil to it, keep the flame to medium. When the oil is hot, add asafoetida and turmeric powder. Allow to cook for few seconds. Next to it add the curry leaves and dry red chillies, stir for few seconds.

I tossed the roasted peanuts, roasted chana with black peel, roasted chana dal in a pan without oil until they turned light brown before adding them to the kadai. Add them to the main kadai for cooking when done.

Now add salt, red chilli powder in the masala (do not add red chilli first it will burn, add it only at this stage of cooking) and mix again. Keep stirring for few seconds, please do not over cook this mixture.

To this mixture┬áadd the puffed rice and mix well. The masala prepared┬áshould mix nicely & evenly┬á (as much possible) to the entire puffed rice. Allow it to cool for 10 minutes. Though for me this rule doesn’t apply :) and I start munching these as soon as they are done!

You can store these spicy mamra’s in┬áan air tight container and keep having these when you feel hungry in between meals or have it as┬átea time snacks.

Enjoy this low-fat snack option anytime during the day!!!!
