Simple recipe but very tasty, I love eating upma and at the same time I love experimenting with the upma in various forms. Right now my post is on simple basic rava upma but will share other upma recipes as well with you all and hope you will enjoy making the same way I enjoy cooking & sharing them.
Ingredients -
- Sooji / Rava - 1 cup
- Onion- 1 big size(sliced)
- Curry leaves - 7-10
- Chana Dal - 1 teaspoon
- Urad Dal -1 teaspoon
- Green Chillies - 4 sliced
- Mustard Seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Oil - 1 - 2 tablespoon
- Water - 3 cups ( reduce it to 2 1/2 cups if you want your upma to be dry)
- Garam Masala to taste
- Peanuts - 1 tablespoon
- Cumin Seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Salt to taste
Method -
In a heavy bottom pan or kadai, dry roast sooji/rava for few minutes and remove it in a vessel. Now add oil to the same kadai, put mustard seeds, cumin seeds and let it fry for few seconds and then add sliced onions to it. Fry for about 5-7 minutes and then add green chillies, curry leaves.
Add water to it and let it come to a boil, now add slowly the sooji and keep stirring it so that no lumps form in the recipe. Let it cook on low flame for few minutes. If you want the upma to be dry, keep it on low flame for another 5 more minutes.
Serve hot with any chutney ( I prefer mint chutney and tomato ketchup with this upma
….┬áEnjoy cooking!!

add veggies also .. carrots, beans, peas and potatoes…!!! In order to ensure that the upma does not get sticky, place a tawa on a slow flame and keep the upma kadai on the tawa and close it with the lid. Dum Upma… !!! It would be very tasty… !!!
For Upma, the best south indian combination is RASAM. Have it with Rasam and it wud taste yummy..!!!
Thanks Meena, Yeah that I will prepare and then post as veggie Upma. Will surely try it with Rasam….
