Curd Rice

Thayir (Curd) Saadham (Rice) is one of the most popular staple food that is prepared in many states of South India and mainly Tamil Nadu. It is also eaten and preferred in western India.

Curd Rice is a very simple yet filling dish, curd rice can be eaten at any time of the day. Curd Rice is a part of the everyday meal almost in every South Indian household. I have made it with a little variation in the original curd rice recipe by adding carrots and cucumber to it… so we can actually call it a vegetable curd rice :) .. to enhance the flavour according to your taste you can also put raw mango pieces, peanuts , pomegranates etc to your curd rice. Coriander leaves can also be added to this dish though I missed to add that while cooking.

Ingredients -

  • Boiled Rice - 2 cups
  • Curd - 1 cup
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Curry leaves - 6-8
  • Ginger juice - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Carrot grated - 1
  • cucumber cubed - 2 tablespoon
  • Chana Dal - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Dhuli urad dal - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Green chillies chopped - 1-2

Method -

Wash cucumber and carrot, chop cucumber into small cubes, grate carrot and keep aside. Now chop green chillies and grate ginger, squeeze juice from the grated ginger and keep it in a small bowl.

Now heat oil in a non-stick pan, add mustard seeds , cumin seeds to it and when the seeds start popping add chana dal, urad dal, ginger juice and curry leaves, fry for about 4-5 seconds and then turn off the heat.

In a big bowl add boiled rice, curd, carrots, cucumber, salt and the mustard seed tempering. Mix well; your curd rice is ready to serve.

Enjoy!!
