Watermelon Summer Cooler with Watermelon Snow Balls | Easy Summer Drink

A very refreshing and a cooling summer drink or I will say a blessing for Summers, no other fruit feels so refreshing in summers like the thirst quenching watermelon. In Bangalore we see Watermelons almost all the year round but now a days watermelons are kind of flooded on the road sides as it’s always believed that the season for watermelon is in the summer when they are sweet and of the best quality.

My kids get Watermelon juice in their juice breaks at school and when they come home they ask me to give them the same juice, so I thought of surprising them the other day with a nice watermelon drink with watermelon snow balls :) . A great quick fix drink with just few ingredients, a quick spin in the blender and it’s ready to serve.

This drink is so famous in India mostly in Southern India and we see this being sold on the road side as well. Not only India but Watermelon Juice is available everywhere and this drink is one of the famous drinks often sold by street vendors in Mexico too. This is known as Aguas Frescas :) there. ”Aguas” in Spanish means “water” and “Frescas” meaning “Fresh” or “fruit waters.” It is a fresh fruit drink which is popular all over Mexico.

A little bit about Watermelons -

Watermelon is an excellent source of Vitamin C and A. It also has other nutrients like Potassium and Magnesium.

The most toughest task is to choose the right kind of Watermelon when you go to the vegetable market and to me all watermelons kept there seem so damn alike. I generally pick one up then the other and then finally go by my gut feeling, but the saddest part is when you are craving for it and cut it at home and you see a white, pale, yellowish, pinkish watermelon with non juicy flavor…awwwhh…it surely puts you off!!! So after research on how to pick the right kind of watermelon, I found some relief :) . I could finally find out the best way to choose a flavorful watermelon and I would love to share it here too. First is that you need to look at the color and quality of the flesh of the melon, it should be deep in color with no white streaks. When choosing a whole watermelon, look for one that had a smooth rind and should be little heavy in its size. It should be neither overly shiny nor overly dull. The main check is that one side of the melon should have a color (light yellowish or creamish) that is different from the entire big piece as that is the portion where the watermelon was resting on the ground during ripening and if you don’t see a light color patch on the watermelon it means it may have been harvested prematurely, which will negatively affect its taste and texture.

Now coming back to the Watermelon Summer Cooler drink……..

Ingredients -

  • Watermelon pieces (deseeded) - 3 Cups
  • Powdered Sugar - 2 tablespoon (optional)
  • Honey - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Lemon Juice - 1 teaspoon
  • Ice Cubes - 6 - 7

Method -

Peel and cut the watermelon, then remove its seeds. Now in a bowl, whisk lemon juice and honey until honey dissolves and keep it aside (the sweetness levels can always be adjusted by experimenting with the amount of honey and lemon and it depends on the personal preference).

In a blender place the peeled and deseeded watermelon cubes, powder sugar and the ice cubes and process until smooth.

Once the watermelon juice is nicely blended, stir in the honey and lemon mixture. I like to add more watermelon and no water but have seen many recipes that suggest adding 2 - 3 cups of water into this juice. I simply compensate water with ice cubes and that too not many. Now refrigerate this juice until very cold.

You can add chunks of watermelon into it along with 1 -2 ice cubes while serving. As it is we have not sieved this juice so it will be little pulpy but trust me you will love it, any which ways I believe watermelon contains more water so why add water from our end to it and lose its natural flavour :) . But if you prefer clear juice then the other way you always have is to sieve it into another container to avoid the pulp and enjoy!!

Watermelon Snow Balls - Scoop the Watermelon with the help of an ice cream scooper, put it in the freezer for just about 15 - 20 minutes and not more (we do not intend to freeze it too hard, in fact they should be ice chilled only). Take these snow balls out when you plan to serve them, sprinkle some powdered sugar on top of it before serving and see the magic :) . I served it this way to my kids, you can add a little bit of honey on top of it or any sauce like chocolate or strawberry and you will love the flavour of it with the frozen watermelon snow balls……I must say it will be yummy enough for the tummy!!

In summers it is a bliss to have refreshing watermelon and what luck if along with it a bonus of watermelon snow balls, I am sure kids will adore you for this and you too would want to be like kids to have it….so why wait, all you need is One Big Watermelon and rest is left to your creativity!!!!

I did few variations to the recipe to suit my kids taste, hence I would suggest you also to work around this recipe to match your taste and experiment with this wonderful fruit :).

Enjoy this refreshing drink with the snow balls!!

Thank You for visiting madcookingfusions! I scooped the melon gently and not much of juice oozed out from the balls, it was about 1 teaspoon approx juice which stayed in the melon itself and the same I added to my watermelon summer cooler. Do try it out, it was fun having it chilled, my kids loved it…you can add toppings to it as per your taste if you wish.

Love to have watermelon, but removing the seeds is a pain in the bum for me.
I’m a lazy girl, hehe.
My dadaji told me once that he saw some people tap/knock the fruit with their fingers (the way we knock door) to check if the fruit is good. I don’t know how it works, hehe.

I love watermelon too, removing seeds is an issue at my place too and I like a good maa do this job before serving them… :)

Still I have seen many judge watermelons by knocking on it, I tried myself seeing other but never ever till date can make out this way, to me all knocks look same …lol, but I guess experianced people can really make out by doing so and can tell if the melon is ready to eat or not ..!
