Semiya Recipe (Vermicelli Dessert)

This dessert is dedicated to the festival of Rakshabandhan┬á:)…..staying away from own family and relatives is truly felt on festivals. I could not tie rakhi┬áto my brother because of distance┬ábut least I can do is dedicate this recipe of Sweet┬áSemiya Dessert to my brother. This dessert is a commonly prepared┬áin most of the homes and is a combination of Vermicelli, milk and lots of nuts.

Rakshabandhan┬á(Hindi: Óñ░ÓñòÓÑìÓñÀÓñ¥Óñ¼ÓñéÓñºÓñ¿, Punjabi: Ó¿░Ó¿òÓ¿©Ó¿╝Ó¿¥Ó¿¼Ó®░Ó¿ºÓ¿¿, Urdu: Ï▒┌®Ï┤Ϻ Ï¿┘åÏ»┌¥┘å the bond of protection), or Rakhi┬á(Hindi: Óñ░Óñ¥ÓñûÓÑÇ, Bengali Óª░Óª¥ÓªûÓºÇ, Punjabi: Ó¿░Ó¿¥Ó¿ûÓ®Ç, Urdu: Ï▒Ϻ┌®┌¥█î), is a festival primarily observed in India, which celebrates the relationship between brothers and sisters. It is also called Rakhi┬áPurnima┬áin certain parts of India, like the south. The festival is observed by Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs. The central ceremony involves the tying of a rakhi┬á(sacred thread) by a sister on her brother’s wrist. This symbolizes the sister’s love and prayers for her brother’s well-being, and the brother’s lifelong vow to protect her. The festival falls on the full moon day (Shravan┬áPoornima) of the Shravan┬ámonth of the Hindu lunisolar calendar. It grew in popularity after Rani Karnavati, the widowed queen of Chittor, sent a rakhi to the Mughal emperor Humayun when she required his help.

Now coming back to what I made as a sweet dessert for Rakhi, in our family the┬átradition is to prepare sweet semiya┬áon the rakhi┬áday, of course along with as many sweets or mithai┬áyou wish to eat but this is a must meetha…… so I made it for my family and would love to add it in my journal┬áand share too!!

Ingredients -

  • Vermicelli broken - 2 cups
  • Milk - 500 - 700 ml
  • Condensed Milk - 2 tablespoon
  • Almonds - 7-10
  • Raisins 5-10
  • Safforn Strings
  • Cardamom Powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Sugar to taste

Method -

Dry roast the vermicelli to light brown and keep aside.

Take a heavy bottom pan, boil milk in it and add the roasted vermicelli to it and let it simmer on low flame for about 7 minutes.Keep stirring in between. When the vermicelli become little soft add sugar and condensed milk to it and cook it on low flame for another 7 minutes. Add the cardamom powder and chopped nuts to it, mix well and cook for few more minutes.Garnish with saffron strings and nuts before you serve.

I don’t fry the nuts in ghee and put them directly into the semiya┬ábut if you wish to fry them then use ghee to roast the nuts and raisins and add to the semiya.

Can be served cold and hot both. I like having it both cold and hot….

Enjoy!!
